Thornton, a suburb of Denver,  is a relatively new city. First settled in 1954, predominantly by World War II veterans and their families, Thornton quickly grew to encompass its immediate neighbors. Now, at approximately 148,000 residents, Thornton, Colorado is the 6th largest city in Colorado. It is the easternmost city in the north Denver area, making it the closest city to Denver International Airport. Thornton boasts nearly 1,000 acres of developed park and recreation centers, and 230 acres of open space. Just west of town, about a 20 minute drive, you will find yourself in the mountains full of recreational and outdoor activities. Thornton hosts three festivals a year. Thorntonfest is held in May, and features a car show, climbing wall and carnival rides. Other activities at the festival include a petting zoo, canine disk contest and three stages of live music. The Harvest Fest is in September, and celebrates the community spirit of the residents and businesses. Winterfest is held in December and rings in the holiday with a holiday lighting contest and city-provided ice-skating rink and fireworks show.  Explore around town to see the more than 170 pieces of public art located around. Thornton is also home to Denver Premium Outlets, a LEED-certified mall with designer and lifestyle brands including Marmot, Columbia Factory Store and Tommy Hilfiger.  Large increases in population has spurred tons of new development around Thornton. Many new buildings, neighborhoods, and apartment complexes have sprung up over town and accompany many amenities. The community atmosphere in Thornton is another reason why locals love living in town. Throughout the 81 parks, you will find families and kids enjoying the Colorado sunshine. One of the oldest neighborhoods in Thornton is Eastlake, located behind the large East Lake in north Thornton. A northeast suburb of the Denver metro area, Thornton is a great place to visit for a balance of recreation and city life.
